The Bretuo family and the Asante Mampong Traditional Council have informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, about a death. This is in line with Ashanti traditional rites. The deceased is Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Paramount Chief of the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away last week after a short illness. He was enstooled as Mamponghene on August 25, 1996. He succeeded his uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II, who abdicated the stool.
Privately known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, he was born on December 31, 1939. He attended Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon. Before becoming Mamponghene, he served as Registrar at KNUST in Kumasi and worked as a lawyer.
During his 26-year reign, he brought significant development to Asante-Mampong. He was recognized for maintaining peace and stability in the area. Notably, he ruled without any chieftaincy disputes—a rare achievement.
Records show he is the only Paramount Chief since 1930 without disputes or litigations during his tenure. Traditional authorities and family members dressed in black conveyed news of his passing to the Asantehene and Asantehemaa according to custom.
The delegation included Nana Agyakoma Difie, Queenmother of Mampong Traditional Area, and Yaa Asantewaa II from Ejisu.
