Man Allegedly Defrauded Ginger Supplier of GH¢68,400

Dansoman Circuit Court Update

The Dansoman Circuit Court has granted bail to Bernard Aboagye. He is a 49-year-old businessman charged with defrauding by false pretence. The case involves the alleged fraudulent acquisition of 18 bags of ginger worth GH¢68,400.

The complainant, Adam Abdulai, is also a businessman. He lives in Bonsu Nkwanta in the Western North Region. Abdulai met Aboagye through the JWI app in March 2025.

Aboagye wanted to buy 100 bags of ginger. Abdulai then sourced the product for him. On May 19, 2025, they met at Agbogbloshie market to negotiate.

They agreed on a price of GH¢3,800 per bag. Abdulai briefly left for prayers at a nearby mosque. When he returned, he found the ginger missing.

Investigations revealed that Aboagye sold the ginger to someone else. He gave Abdulai a Prudential Bank cheque for GH¢68,400. However, Abdulai rejected it and asked for cash instead.

Aboagye assured him that the cheque would clear on May 20. The next day at Prudential Bank's Kingsway branch, they learned the cheque could not be cashed due to restrictions.

Aboagye then took Abdulai to Tema to find the buyer. However, he could not identify this person or their residence. He admitted he had only spoken with them over the phone.

Attempts to contact this alleged buyer and an accomplice have failed so far. Police are working with telecom companies to retrieve their details.

Bernard Aboagye has pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretence. This charge is under section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29).

The court granted him bail set at GH¢80,000 with three sureties. All sureties must be public servants earning at least GH¢5,000 monthly and living within jurisdiction.

Aboagye must also deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and report weekly to police. Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder will file disclosures and witness statements before the Case Management Conference on July 27, 2025.
