Man remanded for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend in Somanya

The Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court, led by Kwasi Apiatse Abaidoo, has remanded a car washer. Isaac Tetteh Angmortey, 26, is in custody for three weeks. He assaulted his pregnant girlfriend, Hannah Amedi, 29.

Angmortey pleaded guilty to causing harm under section 84 of the Criminal Code 1960 (Act 29). He will return to court on April 10, 2025.

Police Chief Inspector John Brahene reported that police received a distress call. An unknown caller said a pregnant woman was being beaten along Mount Mary Road in Somanya.

When police arrived, they found Angmortey physically assaulting Amedi. They arrested him and took him to the station for further action.

Inspector Brahene noted that Amedi is six months pregnant. She had multiple injuries; her forehead was swollen and blood was oozing from her lips, neck, and ears.

Amedi received a police medical form and was referred to Yilo Krobo District Hospital for treatment due to severe beatings.

The prosecution officer mentioned that Amedi had been staying with her aunt for about a month. This was due to Angmortey's recent abusive behavior toward her.

During interrogation, Angmortey claimed he was at work when he suspected infidelity. He returned home but found no one there. He then went to his girlfriend’s auntie’s house and began beating her.

After being arraigned before the court, Angmortey was remanded in custody. The Ghana News Agency confirmed that Amedi has not lost her unborn child.

Authorities have condemned the attack and stressed the need to address domestic abuse cases urgently. The community is shocked and outraged over this incident.

They are calling for justice and stronger actions against domestic violence. This incident has sparked renewed discussions on protecting vulnerable individuals from harm.
