The body of an unidentified man, believed to be in his mid-50s, was found in a storm drain. This occurred near Transition at Agbogba in the Ga East Municipality on Monday. Heavy rains hit Accra on Sunday.
The three-hour downpour caused severe flooding across many areas. Four deaths have been confirmed due to the flooding.
Mr. Dennis Mensah, Assemblyman for Agbogba, reported that the man was swept away while riding a bicycle. He ignored warnings from community members about rising water levels.
"There were actually two people, but one survived," Mr. Mensah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA). "A private security officer was not lucky, and we lost him."
Residents attempted to rescue the victim but were unsuccessful. His body was later discovered in a nearby drain.
Three other fatalities occurred in Adentan Municipality at Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.
Mr. Mensah expressed shock at the flooding's extent and blamed it on unregulated construction blocking waterways.
"Since I became an assemblyman, I’ve never seen this type of flood before," he said. "It used to happen, but this is too much."
Resident Mr. John Kofi Dediha linked the flooding to waste disposal practices that clog drainage channels. He urged residents to act responsibly to prevent future disasters.
Some residents called on the government to speed up work on a stalled storm drain project at Happy Home. They believe this will help reduce future flood risks.
