Private lawyer Martin Kpebu insists the public deserves clarity from EOCO. This follows the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Kpebu spoke on TV3 on May 31, 2025. He argued that high-profile arrests require transparency from security agencies. He disagreed with those who say EOCO does not owe the public information.
“Governance runs on information; it is not private property,” he stated. Kpebu acknowledged that EOCO must protect its investigations but emphasized public rights to know broad reasons for arrests.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on May 27, 2025. Initially, details about his case were withheld. His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, later confirmed charges and ongoing interrogation.
The charges involve alleged dealings with EXIM Bank, which Wontumi denies. Kpebu criticized EOCO’s silence, saying it fuels claims within the NPP about punitive bail conditions.
“EOCO should have explained why Wontumi is being charged,” he said. He noted that Raymond Archer, the EOCO Boss and a journalist, should understand this issue better.
Regarding bail amounts, Kpebu explained they reflect the seriousness of allegations. He urged critics like former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to focus on facts instead of just bail amounts.
“People should be asking what the charges are,” he added. Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Srem Sai confirmed Wontumi's investigation for money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.
This call for transparency highlights broader concerns about public trust in high-profile cases.
