Private lawyer Martin Kpebu has criticized senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He claims they are politicizing the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. Wontumi is the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
Kpebu spoke on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 31. He said some NPP leaders are using Wontumi’s situation for their political agendas. This is especially true with the 2028 elections approaching.
“It appears the NPP is using Chairman Wontumi’s matter for a political campaign,” he stated. “The NPP needs to sanitise the situation; it doesn’t look tidy at all.” The legal issues surrounding Wontumi have attracted significant attention due to their political implications.
Wontumi is under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He faces allegations of money laundering, fraud, and causing financial loss to the state.
He was arrested on May 27 and granted bail of GH¢50 million on May 28. His bail was secured with two justified sureties.
Initially, his legal team struggled to meet these conditions. However, his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed on May 30 that all requirements were fulfilled.
Despite this progress, Wontumi's release has been delayed due to a new legal challenge. This has heightened both political and legal tensions around his case.
Appiah-Kubi commented on the delay: “We encountered some difficulties which will be sorted out on Monday, June 2.” He added that they would focus on achieving results within the law.
In light of these complications, Kpebu questioned why Wontumi remains detained. He urged the NPP to improve its internal coordination.
“The party must find a way to streamline its actions,” he said. This would help prevent further confusion and public embarrassment during this crisis.
