Martin Kpebu slams Mahama’s March 31 asset declaration deadline

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly criticized President John Mahama’s decision to set March 31 as the deadline for government appointees to declare their assets, arguing it contradicts the constitution.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, he cited Article 286(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates appointees to declare assets before assuming office, not months later.

Kpebu pointed out that while Act 500 allows up to six months for declarations, it clashes with the constitution, making it void.

He warned that delaying asset disclosures opens doors to corruption, as ministers quickly engage with business entities upon assuming office.

With a Supreme Court ruling on the matter pending, he urged Mahama to revise the deadline and uphold the constitutional standard.
