Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central MP, has reacted to a U.S. court ruling. A federal judge reduced Anas Aremeyaw Anas's $18 million defamation award to just $500.
The judge made this decision after Agyapong’s legal team filed a motion for remittitur. They argued that the original award was too high, prompting the court to reconsider it.
The judge confirmed that Agyapong had defamed Anas but called the compensation “excessive.” He then lowered the damages to $500.
In a viral video, Kennedy said he would give the $500 to Anas. He mentioned that one of his team members already paid it. He joked about possibly giving Anas $5,000 instead.
Anas responded to the court's decision by emphasizing that their victory lies in the judgment itself. He stated this fight is not about money but about truth and justice.
Anas expressed satisfaction that no allegations against him were proven in court. He vowed to continue fighting against corruption and holding wrongdoers accountable.
Earlier, the Superior Court of New Jersey awarded Anas $18 million in his defamation suit against Agyapong and Frederick Asamoah. This ruling followed a legal battle over statements made by Agyapong during a 2021 interview.
Anas filed his lawsuit on May 17, 2022, in Essex County Superior Court. He accused both men of making false and damaging statements on “The Daddy Fred Show.” During this show, Agyapong made several serious accusations against Anas, including claims of criminal activity and involvement in journalist Ahmed Suale's murder.
