President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly formed National Peace Council to build public trust. He wants Ghana to remain a symbol of peace and stability in the region.
During the inauguration of the 13-member board on May 7, 2025, he stressed the Council's role in national unity. He encouraged members to stay impartial and resilient against political pressures. “Ghanaians expect you to rise above partisanship,” he said.
He also called for stronger collaboration with key democratic institutions. This includes the Electoral Commission and the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC). The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and traditional authorities should also be involved.
“Pre-election dialogue platforms must become institutionalized,” President Mahama emphasized. He highlighted ongoing chieftaincy conflicts, particularly in Bawku. He urged the Council to support mediation efforts for lasting peace.
“Violence in Bawku has caused many deaths and displacements,” he noted. Chieftaincy conflicts threaten Ghana’s image as a peaceful nation.
Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak spoke at the event too. He revealed that the Council is reviewing strategies for the 2024 general elections. The aim is to strengthen national resilience and peace.
He also mentioned that Ghana will chair and host GAAMAC soon. This reflects Ghana's commitment to peacebuilding and human rights.
