Michael Owen Korletey Elected Presiding Member of Shai Osudoku District Assembly, Pledges Accelerated Development

Michael Owen Korletey has been elected as the new Presiding Member of the Shai Osudoku District Assembly. He aims to unite assembly members to speed up development in the district. He described this development as long overdue.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Korletey highlighted underdevelopment in many communities. He pointed out poor road infrastructure and limited access to clean water. He also mentioned the lack of telecommunication networks in some areas. These conditions are unacceptable for a district in Greater Accra Region.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Korletey is optimistic about his development agenda. He believes his close relationship with Hon. Linda Obeniwa Akweley Oklu will help drive change. She is both the local Member of Parliament and Greater Accra Regional Minister.

The election was competitive, with four candidates participating. Some traditional leaders and the Regional Minister had suggested narrowing it down to two candidates. In the first round, Mr. Korletey did not secure a majority vote. However, two contenders withdrew from the second round after tying votes.

This led to a 'yes' or 'no' vote on Mr. Korletey's candidacy, which he won overwhelmingly. Before this election, ten newly appointed government members were sworn into the assembly. They joined 22 elected members to complete the assembly's composition.

Hon. Oklu addressed the assembly and urged selflessness in their duties. She promised her support for achieving sustainable development across the district. The Minister also asked members to respect the President’s decision regarding the District Chief Executive nominee.

The newly sworn-in appointees expressed gratitude for their roles and pledged support for local governance improvements. The Shai Osudoku District Assembly will reconvene soon to discuss key development priorities and confirm the DCE nominee from the President.
