Minister calls for more power to chiefs in fight against galamsey

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, wants to give traditional leaders more authority. He believes this will help fight illegal mining (galamsey) and support local development.

In an interview on State of Affairs with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Ibrahim discussed the limited powers of chiefs. He questioned how they can effectively address illegal mining in their areas.

“Can you imagine if chiefs could summon people mining illegally?” he asked.

He pointed out that miners often ignore chiefs' authority. A miner may receive a letter from the minister of lands and start digging without regard for the chief's wishes.

Ibrahim emphasized that traditional rulers are the true custodians of the land. He believes empowering them will lead to significant development in their communities.
