Ministry of Health reports rise in tobacco and nicotine use in Ghana

The Ministry of Health is concerned about tobacco use in Ghana. They collaborated with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), WHO, Ghana Health Service, and Civil Society Organisations.

On May 31, they released a statement for World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2025. This year's theme is: “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.”

The Ministry cited data from the STEP Survey. It shows that 4.8% of adults aged 18–69 smoke tobacco. There is a gender difference: 9.3% of men and 0.3% of women smoke.

Among tobacco users, 7.8% smoke shisha. The highest prevalence is among those aged 18–29 at 12.7%. Of men who smoke, 6.6% use shisha; for women, it’s 44%.

Tobacco use causes preventable illness and death. It leads to lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, COPD, and reproductive health issues. Second-hand smoke also increases respiratory infections and asthma risk.

These figures highlight the need for stronger regulations and public awareness efforts. Selling ENDS, vapes, and non-nicotine products violates the Public Health Act of 2012.

This year’s theme calls for action against industry tactics that normalize nicotine use. The Ministry aims to educate the public about these deceptive practices.

They are committed to strengthening existing tobacco control policies as well. For WNTD 2025, the Ministry announced activities like an official launch and a public awareness walk in Ho, Volta Region.
