Ministry of Health urges GRNMA to rescind strike decision

The Ministry of Health is shocked and disappointed. This follows the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association's (GRNMA) decision to strike. The Ministry urges the GRNMA to reconsider for the sake of patients.

In a statement, spokesperson Tony Goodman expressed surprise at the GRNMA's directive. He noted that there had been many discussions between Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and GRNMA leaders.

The Ministry highlighted that President John Dramani Mahama’s government has prioritized health workers' welfare. They mentioned the introduction of Conditions of Service for nurses and midwives in 2015 as a key achievement.

Minister Akandoh has met with GRNMA leaders over five times since taking office. Recent talks led to an agreement to form a Tripartite Committee with the Ministries of Health and Finance, along with the GRNMA. This committee aims to address delays in implementing updated Conditions of Service.

The Ministry clarified that these updated Conditions were set to start in 2024 under the previous administration but faced delays. While they recognize fair labor practices, they condemned using strikes as leverage. Such actions can endanger patients’ lives and disrupt ongoing discussions.

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to good faith negotiations. They urge the GRNMA to do the same for better healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Finally, the Ministry calls on the GRNMA to withdraw its strike directive. They encourage continued engagement through the agreed committee structure for a peaceful resolution.
