The Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources has called for better collaboration among stakeholders. This is to tackle the growing issue of water pollution.
The call was made during a dialogue on "Sustainable Water Management in Ghana." This event was part of the activities for World Water Day, observed on March 22.
The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) organized the dialogue. The Centre of Excellence in Public Utility Regulations also participated. Experts and policymakers discussed strategies to preserve Ghana’s water resources.
Deputy Minister Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui delivered a speech on behalf of the Minister. She stressed the need for stricter regulations to protect rivers from pollution, illegal mining, and waste disposal.
The Minister highlighted that industries, businesses, and local communities must be accountable for their environmental impact. This accountability is crucial to prevent a potential water crisis.
Prof Samuel K. Bonsu, Rector of GIMPA, also spoke at the event. He urged authorities to enforce existing laws to protect natural resources, especially water bodies.
He emphasized that sustainable water management is vital for long-term environmental health and public safety.
The event highlighted the urgent need for collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and communities. Together, they can address water pollution and promote responsible practices that protect Ghana’s rivers and water sources.
