Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment launches Human Capital Development Youth Conference

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has launched a conference. This event is in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission.

The Human Capital Development Youth Conference aims to equip young people with essential skills. These skills will help them grow personally and professionally.

At the opening ceremony, Minister George Opare Addo spoke about youth empowerment. He stressed the need to provide young people with tools for success.

He stated, “Youth empowerment is not just talk; it drives socio-economic change.” He noted that youth are the largest demographic in ECOWAS. Investing in their talents is crucial for sustainable development.

The Minister expressed concern over youth unemployment and brain drain. He called these issues major obstacles to regional development goals.

“Mentorship is vital,” he said, linking experienced professionals with young people. This support helps in career development and personal growth. However, challenges like unemployment still threaten youth potential.

Ruben Johnson, Special Adviser to the Vice President of ECOWAS, also spoke at the event. He highlighted how brain drain affects critical sectors like healthcare.

“The loss of young health professionals threatens our healthcare systems,” he warned. Johnson urged for strong policies to retain skilled workers in the region. He cautioned that inaction could worsen the human resource crisis in key sectors.
