Minority Caucus makes U-turn as they return to Parliament after announcing boycott

The minority in parliament has changed its stance. They returned to Parliament after announcing a boycott.

On May 29, the NPP minority walked out over Chairman Wontumi’s bail conditions. Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the CID headquarters on May 27.

He spent the night at EOCO because he could not meet his bail conditions. Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28. However, his legal team did not fully satisfy the requirements for his release.

Wontumi is under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank. The minority vowed to boycott all proceedings until EOCO modifies Wontumi’s bail conditions and releases him.

On May 30, members of the Minority Caucus were seen in Parliament despite their announced boycott. Earlier, they staged a sit-in outside EOCO's headquarters in Accra on May 29. They demanded the release of Chairman Wontumi, who is also the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling NPP.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai revealed that Wontumi is under investigation for fraud and money laundering. He is also being investigated for an international organized crime scheme.

Justice Srem-Sai noted that EOCO is working with international law enforcement partners on these investigations. The ongoing inquiry includes asset recovery efforts to secure suspected proceeds of crime.
