Minority Leader Condemns Suspension of Chief Justice
The Minority in Parliament has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. They call his decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo a "brazen judicial coup."
According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority, this action is a reckless abuse of power. They argue it directly attacks the independence of Ghana’s Judiciary.
They believe this move shows political vendetta and judicial intimidation. It also appears aimed at filling the courts with judges sympathetic to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Statement on Suspension
The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo violates due process. The President acted while legal challenges are still pending in the Supreme Court. This is seen as executive overreach and interference.
The Minority compares this situation to past abuses under President Kwame Nkrumah. They demand an immediate reversal of what they call an unconstitutional act.
Political Control Concerns
President Mahama's actions suggest a desire for political control, not accountability. His promise to appoint NDC-aligned judges raises concerns about his motives.
This approach undermines good governance and threatens judicial independence. Ghana is a constitutional democracy, not a personal fiefdom.
Warning to the Administration
The Minority warns President Mahama against further actions targeting the judiciary. Any attempts to intimidate or unlawfully remove the Chief Justice will face strong resistance.
They vow to challenge any efforts to fill the judiciary with compliant judges. The legal community and civil society will defend judicial independence vigorously.
Call for Action
The Minority demands:
1. Immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice until legal challenges are resolved.
2. A halt to all removal proceedings until constitutionality is determined by the judiciary.
They emphasize that Ghana’s judiciary must remain independent and free from political influence. Enough is enough; they will oppose any attempts to politicize the courts.
