Minority MPs boycott parliament over Wontumi’s detention

Minority Members of Parliament walked out of Parliament on Thursday. They protested the continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.

The MPs showed solidarity with Wontumi, who remains in custody. This is despite being granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Wontumi was arrested after investigations into illegal mining activities, known as “galamsey.” Authorities suspect he contributed to significant financial losses for the state. Allegations include mining without a valid license and damaging forest reserves.

There are also claims of contaminating water bodies in the Ashanti Region. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had invited him for questioning earlier. After attending, EOCO took him into custody for further interrogation.

His legal team stated that charges focus on environmental degradation from unregulated mining. They also mention economic damage linked to these activities.

Wontumi was granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two sureties. However, he has not met the bail conditions and remains in EOCO custody.

The Minority argues that his arrest raises concerns about due process and transparency. They demand a fair legal process and warn against politicizing law enforcement.
