Minority MPs march to EOCO over Wontumi’s detention

Minority Members of Parliament are marching to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). They want to show support for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

The MPs are led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. They say their march is a protest against unfair treatment of Wontumi. He has been in EOCO custody since May 27.

Before the march on Thursday, Afenyo-Markin spoke in Parliament. He urged EOCO to be fair and lawful in its investigations. “Do your work but respect the law,” he said.

Wontumi is under investigation for alleged financial irregularities with EXIMBANK. His detention has caused controversy due to a GHS50 million bail requirement. The Minority calls this bail unreasonable.

Afenyo-Markin questioned where Wontumi would find such properties. He reaffirmed their intention to protest until EOCO acts fairly. “We will absent ourselves from Parliament and join him,” he stated.

He also called for bipartisan support from all MPs. “I pray that my colleagues will unite so EOCO knows Parliament stands together,” he added.

The Minority walked out of Parliament over Wontumi’s continued detention.
