The Minority in Parliament claims the chip-embedded passport project is not new. They say it was fully executed under President Akufo-Addo.
In a statement signed by Samuel A. Jinapor, they called the launch a "purported re-launch." They accused the government of distorting facts.
“The planning, procurement, and execution were all done under the Akufo-Addo Government,” the statement said.
The Minority noted that the project started after a 2013 ICAO directive. It only took shape when the NPP took office in 2017.
They mentioned that 50,000 booklets were ready by December 2024. Biometric passports were issued to Akufo-Addo, Bawumia, and top officials.
“Focus on proper distribution, not PR,” they urged.
They criticized the re-launch as wasteful and unnecessary.
“It serves no functional purpose and is a burden on the public purse.”
