Minority demands action against KMA Boss over flogging threat – Minority

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi. They are upset about his plan to publicly flog traders. This is for those who ignore orders to leave unauthorized trading zones.

The Mayor's comments came before a two-week decongestion exercise. His remarks have sparked public outrage. Many people want him to retract his statement and apologize.

On April 16, Francis Asenso-Boakye spoke out against the Mayor’s comments. He called them reckless and a threat to democracy. He said, “Violence and threats of physical abuse are unacceptable in our democracy.”

Asenso-Boakye added that the Mayor's words could undermine public confidence in local authorities. They may also lead to human rights violations.

The Minority Caucus is urging Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim to act quickly. They want him to tell the Mayor to retract his comments. They suggest a more lawful and respectful approach to enforcement.

Meanwhile, the Mayor defends his plan to flog traders as necessary for order. He believes using police for decongestion is too costly and ineffective. “I want to deal with it head-on,” he stated about the situation in Kumasi.

He mentioned that many traders are selling food on the streets, creating an unattractive environment. The city is filled with filth, which he wants to address directly.

However, he did not confirm if President John Dramani Mahama approved his decision. “Let the focus be on the end product,” he said instead of discussing approval.

The Mayor argues that traditional methods have failed over time. His direct approach aims to be more cost-effective and impactful for Kumasi.
