Minority opposes further tariff hikes, demands improved ECG performance

The Minority Members of the Energy Committee in Parliament oppose any new electricity tariff increases. They demand significant improvements from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) first.

Recently, ECG raised tariffs by 14.75%. However, they still face persistent commercial losses. These losses have led to a massive GHc67 billion debt to power producers. The Minority believes this financial mismanagement is a key reason for ECG's poor performance.

These concerns were discussed during a meeting with key agencies in the power sector. George Kwame Aboagye, the Ranking Member of the Committee, emphasized the need for action. He urged ECG to improve its efficiency and accountability.

"We will not accept or agree to a new tariff," he stated. "We want to see performance first."

Vice Chairman Naser Toure Mahama also expressed concerns. He called on ECG to provide easy access to electricity meters for consumers.

He noted that removing barriers in meter acquisition would boost customer satisfaction and revenue generation for ECG.

"People are waiting for meters so they can start paying," he said. "If ECG produces more meters, it will create more revenue."

He added that timely access would help customers begin paying sooner.
