Minority returns to Parliament after dramatic protest over Wontumi bail

Just a day after a dramatic walkout, the Minority Caucus returned to Parliament. This happened on Friday, May 30, 2025.

The boycott was over the GHC50 million bail for Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is known as Chairman Wontumi and was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Party members called the bail excessive and politically motivated. This sparked outrage within both the NPP and Minority ranks.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led Thursday’s protest. He accused authorities of manipulating the legal process for political reasons.

“We cannot ask for any property. We don’t have GH₵50 million,” he said in Parliament. “They must do the right thing, and we will not participate until then.”

Afenyo-Markin expressed strong support for Chairman Wontumi. He stated, “We will stand with him. If it means spending nights with him, we will.”

However, their return on Friday indicated a change in stance. No official reason was given for this reversal.

Their presence suggested possible negotiations or a new political strategy.

Wontumi remains at the center of investigations into financial crimes by EOCO. The developments may signal a shift in political discourse around his case.
