The Minority in Parliament has declared they will resist any electricity tariff hikes. They demand the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) improve its service first.
They argue that ECG's poor performance must be addressed before raising costs. Recently, there was a 14.75% increase in tariffs. The Minority believes this hike has not improved ECG’s performance.
Instead, they point out ECG's worsening financial situation. The company owes an alarming GH¢67 billion to power producers. This debt is largely due to commercial losses and mismanagement.
These concerns were raised during a meeting with the Parliamentary Energy Committee and energy sector stakeholders. George Kwame Aboagye, the Committee's Ranking Member, stated their firm position: “We will not accept a new tariff without improved performance.”
Vice Chairman Naser Toure Mahama emphasized improving access to electricity meters for consumers. He believes easing the meter acquisition process will benefit both customers and ECG’s finances.
“People are waiting for meters to start paying,” he noted. If ECG can produce more meters, it could generate additional revenue.
Mr. Mahama also urged ECG to streamline operations for faster meter distribution. “They should work hard to prevent delays so customers can pay,” he added, highlighting the connection between efficient service and revenue growth.
