The Minority in Parliament plans to protest against the government's decision. They oppose the increase of petroleum prices by one Ghana Cedi.
They argue this move contradicts the government’s call for a 15% fare reduction for commercial drivers. The Minority describes the fuel levy hike as a "stab in the back" to struggling Ghanaians.
Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh spoke to journalists on June 5 in Accra. He urged the government to withdraw or reduce the levy immediately. He warned that opposition actions will escalate if their demand is not met.
"This is not just about a one cedi increase," he said. "It concerns the soul of our nation." He expressed skepticism about the government's impact analysis.
Annoh-Dompreh called on all Ghanaians to join their cause. He labeled the tax unjust and economically devastating.
He stated, "The Minority will stage many actions in solidarity with Ghanaians." They demand withdrawal or reversal of what they see as a draconian tax.
He criticized the government for being insensitive and out of touch with citizens. The NDC, he claimed, is revealing its true colors through this action.
