Minority urges Mahama to act on Bawku security situation

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged President John Mahama to restore peace in Bawku. He cited increasing insecurity in the area.

At a press briefing after the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee meeting, he said, “I plead with President Mahama to ensure peace in Bawku. The situation is getting out of hand.”

He added, “They inherited a peaceful country and must keep it that way. What is happening in Bawku, where security personnel feel unsafe, is unacceptable.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also expressed concerns about harassment of political opponents. He specifically mentioned members of the NPP and former government officials.

“MPs are being harassed for expressing their views on governance issues,” he said. “We urge the government to show tolerance. When they were in opposition, they raised many issues freely.”

He referred to a recent incident involving Rev Ntim Fordjour as unfortunate. “The event at his residence leaves much to be desired,” he stated. “They could have used due process to invite him.”

He called on the government to focus on governance and citizen welfare. “Government must prioritize creating jobs and improving lives,” he said.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also noted concerns about dismissals from state institutions.

“We know many people are being dismissed from various independent state institutions,” he explained. “These institutions have their own budgets and have recruited staff for 12 or 18 months.”

“The government must take note of this issue,” he concluded.
