The Minority caucus on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament is concerned. They urge the government to act quickly. This follows a Level 2 Travel Advisory from the United States regarding Ghana.
The advisory advises U.S. citizens to “exercise increased caution” in Ghana. It cites rising violent crimes and weak law enforcement as reasons. Serious offences, like sexual assault, are often under-reported.
The advisory also mentions widespread violence, political unrest, and organized crime.
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, the Deputy Ranking Member of the Committee, issued a statement. The Minority called this advisory a “serious indictment” of Ghana’s safety and democracy.
They believe it reflects the government's failure to tackle insecurity and law enforcement issues. Impunity amid rising violence, especially in Bawku, is particularly concerning.
The caucus expressed worries about the government's silence on serious allegations. These include drug trafficking and money laundering. They warned that this could deter investors and damage Ghana’s global image.
They demand immediate action from the government. Restoring the rule of law and rebuilding trust in security institutions is essential. This will help restore Ghana’s standing in the international community.
