The Minority in Parliament is resisting any push for a rerun of elections in Ablekuma North. This constituency currently lacks representation in the 9th Parliament due to unresolved electoral issues.
On Wednesday, June 4th, New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs protested. They marched from Parliament House to the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra. Their demand was for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to provide security. This would allow the collation of election results to resume and finish without delay.
Ablekuma North was one of the constituencies with unfinalized results after the last general election. The Electoral Commission (EC) cited inadequate security as the reason for this delay. Opposition MPs have expressed frustration over this claim.
Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh read a petition on behalf of the Minority. He stated that their demands are simple and clear. He emphasized that denying representation to Ablekuma North violates constitutional rights and democratic principles.
He urged the Police to act quickly. He called for immediate deployment of security personnel at the Electoral Commission's collation center. This would help ensure a peaceful conclusion and declaration of Ablekuma North's results.
Meanwhile, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North joined the protest. She insists she won the election fairly and dismissed calls for a rerun as politically motivated.
She questioned, “If you won, would you want a rerun?” She mentioned having evidence, including pink sheets, supporting her victory. She noted they had collated results with their opponent’s agent six times already.
The situation in Ablekuma North raises constitutional concerns. There is increasing pressure on both the EC and Ghana Police Service to resolve these issues and restore full parliamentary representation for the constituency.
