Minority walks out of Parliament over Chairman Wontumi’s bail conditions

The minority in parliament has walked out over Chairman Wontumi’s bail conditions.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on May 27. He visited the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra. Afterward, he spent the night at EOCO for failing to meet bail conditions.

On May 28, 2025, Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties. However, his legal team did not fully satisfy the requirements for his release. He is under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.

The minority vowed to boycott all proceedings until EOCO changes Wontumi’s bail conditions and releases him. Afenyo Markin spoke before the NPP's march to EOCO. He said, “Do your work but respect the law.”

He noted that many people cooperate with investigative agencies and are treated respectfully. Markin warned that current actions could have consequences in 2029. He questioned how Wontumi would secure GH₵50 million worth of properties.

Markin stated, “Until EOCO does the right thing, we will protest by absenting ourselves from Parliament.” He added that they would join Wontumi and sleep there with him without asking for any property.

He expressed hope that colleagues would unite in support of Wontumi's situation. Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has secured one surety but needs one more to meet full bail conditions.
