Minority walks out of Parliament over Wontumi’s continued detention

On Thursday, members of the Minority caucus in Parliament walked out. They protested the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The walkout followed Wontumi’s legal team failing to meet bail conditions. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) set bail at GHS50 million. Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 27.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the protest. He delivered a strong speech in Parliament. He accused EOCO of treating Wontumi unjustly.

Afenyo-Markin warned that EOCO's actions could have serious political consequences. He said, “Do your work but respect the law.” He noted that many people are treated with dignity during investigations.

Wontumi was arrested due to an investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving EXIMBANK. EOCO requires two sureties for his bail, which he has not met yet.

The Minority Leader criticized the bail requirement as excessive and unrealistic. He asked, “We don’t have GHS50 million worth of properties. Where is he going to get it from?”

He stated that until EOCO acts fairly, NPP members will protest by staying away from Parliament. Afenyo-Markin emphasized they would support Wontumi together.

He clarified that their protest was not against the investigation process. Instead, it aimed to ensure fairness for all citizens involved. Afenyo-Markin expressed hope for unity among colleagues on this issue.
