The Minority in Parliament is urging Ghana’s religious and traditional leaders to intervene. They want these leaders to counsel President John Dramani Mahama against removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
At an emergency press conference on Wednesday, the caucus expressed serious concerns. They described the situation as a troubling attempt to undermine judicial independence. They urged faith and cultural leaders to act before things worsen.
They stated, “To our revered traditional leaders and religious leaders, the time to advise the president is now.” They emphasized that it is also time to pray for the country. “We should not wait until it’s too late,” they added.
The Minority warned that accepting “loose petitions” could weaken a key democratic institution. They questioned how any serious country would entertain such petitions. This could lead to damaging one of democracy's last strongholds.
They argued that the petitions for removing the Chief Justice do not meet constitutional requirements. Therefore, these petitions should not influence this critical process.
Finally, they called on all Ghanaians to defend the judiciary. They urged citizens to resist attempts to politicize it.
