Missing Containers: Port authorities should be held responsible - Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, addressed concerns about missing containers. These containers belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He stated that the board and management are not responsible for goods missing at the port.

Afenyo-Markin spoke on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on May 2. He previously chaired the ECG board and shared a key intervention from his first meeting. He insisted on changing a policy that caused financial losses for ECG.

He explained that contracts should terminate only after delivery to company warehouses. “If ECG awards a contract and it terminates at the port, ECG will lose,” he said. The board minutes reflect this change under his leadership.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that once containers arrive at the port, their security is with port authorities. “If containers are missing at the port, it is not our responsibility,” he noted. The responsibility lies with the port authorities since they have custody of the containers.

He urged state agencies to investigate properly. He suggested that ECG should consider legal action against the port authorities if needed. “The state’s investigative agencies should query the port authorities,” he added.
