Mixed reactions at Circle Obra Spot over Mahama’s 120-day social contract

Drivers at the Circle Obra Spot have mixed feelings about President John Mahama's performance.

Some drivers praise him for keeping most of his promises. Others feel disappointed with the progress since he took office.

Before becoming president, Mahama made 25 key promises in a “social contract.” These promises focused on governance, the economy, energy, and social intervention.

One notable promise was to scrap the betting tax. This decision has received mixed reactions from commercial drivers.

Kwame, a driver with eight years of experience, shared his excitement about the tax removal. He said it allows him to enjoy his betting wins without deductions.

He also praised the President’s commitment to a lean government. “It’s commendable,” he stated. “If he continues like this, it will really help the economy.”

In contrast, Michael expressed a different opinion. He believes removing the betting tax has increased youth unemployment and idleness.

“The youth don’t like to work now,” he said. “They’re always seen on their mobile devices betting.”

Michael called for reintroducing the tax and increasing it to 50 percent to discourage excessive gambling.
