At least seven suspected kidnappers were killed in a mob attack. This incident occurred in Uromi, a town in Edo state, Nigeria. The governor described the attack as "barbaric."
Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo condemned the killings. He promised that those responsible would face legal consequences.
Preliminary investigations showed that the victims were northern Hausa hunters. They were stopped by local security while traveling in a truck. A search of the vehicle found guns, which led to the mob attack.
Residents accused the hunters of being kidnappers and Fulani herdsmen. Governor Okpebholo stated that the police commissioner must conduct a full investigation. At least four people have been arrested for their role in the attack.
Kidnapping for ransom is a growing problem in Nigeria. Violence linked to Fulani herders has increased insecurity and displacement. This situation has also heightened inter-ethnic tensions across the country.
In recent years, hundreds have died in clashes between Fulani herders and farming communities.
