The first Ofie Market Experience will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2025. It will be held at the Amanokrom Community Centre Park in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
This market is initiated by Samuel Kwabena Awuku, known as Sammi Awuku. The goal is to reduce post-harvest losses and provide fresh, organic produce at farm-gate prices.
Ofie Market connects hardworking farmers with consumers. This ensures fresh produce reaches homes while helping farmers earn more.
During last month's launch, Sammi Awuku discussed the challenges farmers face. He emphasized that post-harvest losses are a major concern.
"We wanted to create a platform for farmers to sell directly to consumers," he said. This approach eliminates middlemen and ensures better prices for farmers.
The Ofie Market has received strong community support. Over 500 farmers and 300 market queens are already participating.
Barimah Awuah Sarpong Asiedu–Larbi Esq., the event coordinator, shared details about the market. "There will be playgrounds for children who come with their parents," he said. Vendors will sell various foods, and there will be fun activities for everyone.
The OFIE Market aims to improve lives and support local farmers. It also seeks to make organic produce affordable for all community members.
This event collaborates with the Municipal Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. It has gained widespread community backing.
Mr. Barima Asiedu Larbi highlighted the project's importance in addressing post-harvest losses. “We are creating a platform for farmers to bring their produce after harvest,” he explained.
The new market will occur on the last Saturday of each month. Farmers from various communities will transport their goods to Amanokrom Community Centre.
“The market starts at 6 AM and closes at 5 PM,” he added. Transportation is provided for all farmers ready to sell within Akuapem North.
Regarding security, police personnel and private security details will ensure safety at the market. “We have police guarding the car park along with private security,” he stated.
MTTD personnel will direct traffic during the event as well. A children's playground with adequate security is also planned for market women’s children.
