Ghana’s Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) have confirmed nine Mpox cases. This increase follows a renewed outbreak in May 2025.
Two new infections were reported in Accra. This brings the total number of known cases to nine. The initial detection occurred on Thursday, 15 May.
The latest figures show an increase, but the Ministry has not provided a regional breakdown. Regional health directorates have activated public health emergency protocols. These include aggressive contact tracing and community surveillance to limit further transmission.
The GHS noted that preliminary investigations suggest no known link between the new cases and earlier infections. This indicates multiple sources or pathways for transmission.
Typical symptoms of Mpox include rash, fever, headache, muscle pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. The disease is less severe than smallpox but can still pose serious risks to vulnerable populations.
Ghana first reported Mpox on 8 June 2022 with five initial cases. By November 2023, this number had grown to 34 confirmed cases. Before the 2022 outbreak, there was no endemic presence of the virus in Ghana.
With this resurgence, the Ghana Health Service urges renewed vigilance. They also call for improved detection and response strategies.
