Multi-party democracy has done nothing for this country – Prof Akosa

Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, a former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, spoke at the University of Education, Winneba. He criticized Ghana’s multi-party democracy for failing to benefit the wider population. Instead, he said it has only enriched the political elite.

During the Public Lecture Series on April 11, he stated, “Multi-party democracy has done nothing for this country.” He argued that beneath the appearance of democratic progress lies a deeply unequal system. Only a select few are benefiting from it.

“Since 1992, the only beneficiaries of the system are the political class,” he noted. The professional class and working class have been marginalized. “It’s as if you live in this country; your sense is not respected,” he added.

Prof. Akosa warned that this situation cannot lead to sustainable national development. He called for a radical shift in how Ghana uses its human capital. “We must be prepared to harvest the intellectual might of this country to progress,” he urged.
