The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has made a commitment. His ministry will remove beggars and street dwellers from major cities.
During a visit to the Northern Region, he announced plans for a nationwide operation. This operation will target five key cities, including Tamale.
On Thursday, May 22, he spoke at the commissioning of an apartment block in Tamale. The block was built by the State Housing Company for the Ghana Immigration Service. He emphasized the government's goal to restore order on urban streets.
Muntaka shared that a recent operation in Accra led to over 2,000 arrests of foreign beggars. Nearly half of these individuals have already been repatriated. The remaining beggars are expected to be processed by the end of this week.
The minister also warned prostitutes operating openly on the streets. He stated they would also be removed and sent back to their countries. He urged them to leave voluntarily or face forced removal.
"The beggars are not just a nuisance; they threaten our national security," he said. "By the end of this week, we aim to finish removing all of them."
He assured that action would continue against all street dwellers and prostitutes until they are gone.
