Interior Minister-Designate Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has criticized the inadequate GH¢1.80 daily feeding allowance for Ghana’s prisoners, calling it inhumane and insufficient.

Speaking during his vetting on January 24, the Asawase MP pledged to prioritize prison reforms, starting with increased funding for inmate nutrition.

“It’s shocking to think that we feed prisoners with GH¢1.80 a day. Even pets in our homes are treated better. How can we expect them to stay healthy under such conditions?” he lamented.

Muntaka also raised concerns about overcrowding and poor sanitation in Ghana’s prisons, which exacerbate the spread of diseases like tuberculosis.

He assured the Appointments Committee of his commitment to addressing these systemic challenges if confirmed.
