My 20 years in Parliament makes me an asset to Ghana’s capital market - Avedzi

James Klutse Avedzi is the new Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He has defended his qualifications for this role.

Avedzi has two decades of experience in Parliament. He spent 16 years on finance-related committees, which he believes benefits Ghana’s capital market.

On March 27, Mr. Avedzi spoke on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition. He expressed confidence in President Akufo-Addo’s choice to appoint him.

He stated that his professional background makes him suitable for the job. Avedzi said, “I’m an accountant by profession.”

He served in Parliament for 20 years and chaired key committees for eight years each. This totals 16 years of relevant experience.

Avedzi emphasized accountants' versatility and adaptability to different fields. He noted that he was chair during the passage of the act governing the SEC in 2016.

He believes this background supports his appointment as beneficial for Ghana's capital market.

Reflecting on his new role, Avedzi feels enthusiastic about continuing his service to Ghana’s financial sector.

When informed about his appointment, he gladly accepted it and thanked the President.

He acknowledged that many Ghanaians are unaware of the SEC's role in regulating financial markets.

“It is a sector that is not well known,” he said. Many confuse "securities" with police or military matters.

Avedzi assured the public of his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s capital market. He aims to raise awareness about the SEC's functions.

His experience in parliamentary finance oversight positions him well to drive growth and investor confidence.

“It was a good feeling when I received my appointment,” he added.

His comments come at a crucial time for Ghana’s financial sector, which seeks stability and better regulatory oversight.

With his extensive finance background, Mr. Avedzi believes he can significantly contribute to developing the country’s capital market.
