My accounts were frozen without prior knowledge; I couldn’t pay my children’s fees – Wontumi

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He confirmed that his bank accounts have been frozen. He does not know why this happened.

In April 2025, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) froze all accounts linked to Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining. This action was taken due to alleged financial irregularities.

The freeze was done under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020. This law allows the FIC to restrict access to accounts when there is suspicion of illegal activity.

Wontumi spoke about this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme. He said he found out about the freeze when he went to withdraw money for his children’s school fees.

He expressed frustration over not receiving any prior notification. “What exactly is my offence?” he asked. He learned about the freeze when a bank official informed him he could not access his funds.
