The rainy season is getting stronger in Ghana. Major cities, including Kumasi, face flooding risks. Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, the Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, warns against ignoring these signs.
He spoke at a simulation exercise for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and nearby areas. Mr. Ibrahim emphasized that prevention is cheaper than response. He believes collaboration is essential to save lives.
Disasters do not wait for anyone, he said. Therefore, systems must be ready to act quickly. A coordinated contingency plan is urgently needed. This plan should involve government agencies, local authorities, businesses, and philanthropists.
Mr. Ibrahim stated that NADMO cannot handle this alone. Desilting drains and proper waste management require teamwork. "We can prevent and reduce impacts when the rains come," he added.
Greater Kumasi often suffers from severe flooding issues. Mr. Ibrahim pointed out high-risk areas like KTI/WAEC and Anloga Junction drains. These locations are already filled with waste and debris.
He outlined NADMO’s strategies for Kumasi based on four pillars: prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Key elements include early warning systems and community education campaigns.
Improving infrastructure and environmental management is also crucial. Prepositioning relief logistics ensures quick responses during disasters. Clear roles among stakeholders enhance coordination efforts.
Without planning and training, Mr. Ibrahim warned that lives will be lost after disasters strike. Strong preparedness helps communities build resilience to save lives and resources.
His comments come as cities like Accra and Kumasi face extreme weather challenges due to rapid urbanization. The message remains clear: disaster prevention is possible with collective action before storms hit.
Participants at the workshop found it enlightening. Many realized they lacked knowledge about disaster causes and solutions in their communities until now.
