NADMO confirms 5 deaths in Accra floods, blames poor drainage, urban planning failures

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed five deaths from floods. These floods hit parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, 18 May.

NADMO stated that poor drainage systems and unregulated urban development caused these fatalities. These issues hinder effective flood control in the capital.

In an interview with Channel One TV, NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, shared details about the deaths. Three occurred in Ga East Municipality and two in Adenta.

Yartey expressed sadness over the loss of life. He emphasized the need for better public education on weather warnings. “It is important to stay informed about potential risks,” he said.

He noted that flooding was not just due to heavy rainfall. The city’s poor infrastructure struggles with even moderate rain. “The inadequate drainage system causes persistent flooding,” he added.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency reported 25 millimeters of rainfall in Accra. This amount is low but had a significant impact due to previous showers and runoff from higher areas.

Areas most affected included Adenta, Kaneshie, Weija, Adabraka, and parts of Tema. Roads became impassable, vehicles were submerged, and many residents were stranded.

NADMO has called for stricter enforcement of building regulations. They also seek a coordinated approach to urban planning to prevent future disasters.

The organization urges residents to remain alert to weather advisories during the rainy season. Taking precautionary measures is essential for safety.
