The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed five deaths from flooding. This flooding affected parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18.
NADMO linked the incident to poor drainage systems and unchecked urban development. Richard Amo Yartey, NADMO's Director of Inspectorate, spoke on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV. He noted that three deaths occurred in Ga East Municipality and two in Adenta.
Yartey expressed concern over the fatalities and emphasized the need for education. He advised citizens to pay attention to weather warnings. Staying informed about potential risks is crucial.
He explained that the flooding was not due to heavy rainfall alone. Instead, it was caused by Accra’s inadequate drainage infrastructure. The Ghana Meteorological Agency reported only 25 millimeters of rain fell.
However, prior showers and runoff from higher grounds worsened the situation. Communities like Adenta, Kaneshie, Weija, Adabraka, and parts of Tema were severely impacted. Roads became impassable, vehicles were submerged, and many residents were stranded.
NADMO called for stricter enforcement of building regulations and improved urban planning.
