The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a strong ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES). They demand immediate reforms to address rising violence and indiscipline in schools. NAGRAT wants tough disciplinary powers announced by May 31, 2025. If not, they will take unspecified actions to protect teachers.
In a statement, NAGRAT highlighted alarming incidents of student attacks on teachers. They noted the presence of weapons like guns and machetes in schools. The association stated that the school environment is becoming unsafe for both teachers and serious students.
NAGRAT provided examples of recent attacks. Mr. Walter Yesotor Adanunyo from Christian Methodist High School was attacked for stopping cheating during exams. Mr. Ebenezer Kateya from Accra High School was assaulted for enforcing dress code rules. Additionally, a student at OKESS was caught with a firearm.
NAGRAT identified several key issues contributing to this rise in violence:
- Admission of students who failed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
- Political interference in school discipline
- Inability to repeat underperforming students
- Bureaucratic challenges in removing disruptive students
“The situation is deteriorating fast,” NAGRAT warned. They fear deaths, rape, and extreme violence could soon occur in schools.
To combat this crisis, NAGRAT’s National Council demands specific measures:
1. A public directive from GES allowing immediate dismissal of any student who assaults staff.
2. Automatic dismissal for any student found with a weapon.
3. Authority for school heads to repeat students who fail academically without needing higher approval.
NAGRAT has given GES until May 31, 2025, to announce these measures. If GES fails to act, NAGRAT will initiate actions aimed at ensuring teacher safety in schools.
