NAGRAT urges government to stop ‘romanticising’ school violence and act

Angel Carbonu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), is calling for urgent action. He wants to address the rising violence in Ghanaian schools.

Carbonu warned that lenient discipline has made many schools ungovernable. This situation threatens the quality of education.

On Citi FM, he criticized current student discipline policies. He said these policies have failed to reduce indiscipline and hurt teaching and learning.

“We must stop romanticising this issue,” he stated. “Drastic measures are needed because we are not in normal times.”

He also condemned foreign disciplinary models as ineffective in Ghana.

“Nobody should impose alien disciplinary methods that do not work,” he emphasized.

Carbonu expressed concern over how long Ghana's education system has tolerated ineffective policies. This tolerance has led to a breakdown of governance in schools.

“Our institutions are no longer governable, affecting both learning and teaching,” he said.
