NAPO urges politicians, public office holders to embrace accountability

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a former Minister of Education, spoke about accountability. He urged political leaders to prioritize transparency and responsibility in public service.

In an interview, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, known as “Napo,” addressed his recent invitation from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The NIB invited him to discuss his time at the Education Ministry.

He called this invitation a normal part of public service. Anyone serving must be ready to explain their actions in office.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the importance of accountability in leadership. He encouraged public servants to be open when needed and remember their duty to the people.

As the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, he emphasized that public office is a temporary role. It comes with responsibilities and consequences.

He noted that it is common for state agencies to ask former officials about their decisions. Such inquiries should not be politicized or sensationalized.

“This is not the first time someone has been asked to explain their stewardship,” he said. “Being called does not mean you are guilty.”

These invitations are natural outcomes of holding leadership roles in the public sector.

The former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South urged fellow politicians to maintain integrity while in office. They should always be ready to account for their actions to strengthen public trust in governance.
