Dr. Arko Akoto-Ampaw is the Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital. He announced that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of deaths and admissions at the hospital.
He spoke during the hospital’s 2024 Annual Performance Review in Koforidua on Friday. Dr. Akoto-Ampaw noted that malaria, diabetes, neoplasm, and pneumonia are common reasons for admissions.
Cerebrovascular diseases (strokes) and heart failure are the main causes of death.
In his breakdown of 2024 mortality statistics, Dr. Akoto-Ampaw shared some numbers. Cerebrovascular diseases caused 180 deaths in 2024, up from 157 in 2023. Heart failure led to 102 deaths this year, an increase from 72 last year. Prematurity accounted for 100 deaths in 2024, slightly down from 104 in 2023.
