A conflict is escalating in Akatakyieso, Ashanti Region. Residents claim a group linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is trying to seize a mining concession owned by Smart Mickey Mining Company. They accuse the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator of leading this politically motivated takeover.
Residents fear violence if the situation isn't resolved quickly. They recall a past incident at the AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi, which resulted in five deaths. Community members vow to resist any forceful transfer of control over the concession.
Last week, eyewitnesses reported that security forces evicted Smart Mickey's workers from the site. They allegedly handed operations to a group associated with the NDC. Locals say this was done “under orders from above,” causing outrage among residents.
During a protest, demonstrators wore red bands and carried placards with messages like “NDC is worse than NPP” and “Save Local Mining Companies.” Mr. Jones Owusu, Chairman of the Akatakyieso Unit Committee, called this attempted seizure a betrayal of trust. He emphasized that Michael Owusu acquired the concession legally in 2019.
Owusu accused the NDC faction of greed and treachery. He noted that they previously collaborated with Smart Mickey but now want control over operations and profits. He expressed disappointment as many locals supported the NDC in recent elections.
Smart Mickey Mining has contributed significantly to community development since acquiring the concession. They renovated local facilities, supported health services, and initiated police station construction, which is now 60% complete. The company also provides jobs and aids local churches and orphans during festive seasons.
Mine worker Ishmael Kusi criticized government actions as lawless and warned of potential chaos ahead. He alleged that some invaders were involved in previous mining conflicts at AngloGold Ashanti's site.
Madam Afia Adwubi Kete described these events as “state capture.” She urged President Mahama to uphold his promise for equal treatment for all Ghanaians.
Joseph Gyamfi, local NDC chairman known as “Pusher,” condemned the raid too. He claimed he was denied access despite showing party credentials during the invasion.
Residents are calling on President Mahama, regional authorities, and traditional leaders to restore order and protect their interests before tensions escalate further.
