The Majority Leader, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, spoke about the NDC government's achievements. He highlighted their efforts to improve the economy and make life affordable for Ghanaians.
He urged Parliament to support the Finance Minister's work. This includes maintaining fiscal prudence and strengthening the Ghana Cedi. He also mentioned reducing inflation, prices, and interest rates. These actions aim to revitalize the private sector and restore hope in Ghanaians.
Mr. Ayariga noted a significant rebound of the cedi in recent history. The cedi's strength has led to lower transport fares and reduced food prices.
He made these remarks during his opening speech on Tuesday at Parliament. He reported a 24.1% appreciation of the cedi against the US dollar since January 2025. There was also a 16.2% gain against the British pound.
Additionally, he mentioned a 14.1% strengthening against the Euro. Fuel prices have significantly decreased as well:
- Super XP: from GH₵15.85 to GH₵13.27 (16.28% decrease)
- Diesel XP: from GH₵15.99 to GH₵13.87 (13.26% decrease)
- Super XP 95: from GH₵15.96 to GH₵15.27 (4.32% decrease)
Transport fares have also been reduced across major routes.
Regarding legislative plans, Mr. Ayariga shared that the NDC government will introduce several bills this session. These include a Mid-Year Budget Review and guidelines for using the Common Fund.
Other proposed legislation includes bills related to investment promotion and deposit protection amendments.
Mr. Ayariga emphasized accountability and transparency in government operations as well. He highlighted investigations into corruption, including COVID-19 expenditures and various scandals.
Parliament resumed its business on Tuesday, May 27, after a recess that began on March 29, 2025.
